Teachers asked…so we complied!

Over the years, many teachers have asked how they can prepare their students for their MarineLab trip, or provide meaningful follow up activities after they return home. While a MarineLab program is a complete educational unit on its own, for the teachers that want to expand it into a longer curriculum unit, we are pleased to announce a new partnership with Ocean First Education.

Ocean First Education provides a wide array of online science curricula focusing on the marine world. The content can be used in class, by individuals, separately or as part of a longer unit. Sarah Egner, Senior VP of Program Services, has reviewed the Ocean First Education materials and has created a list of recommendations for teachers for before or after their MarineLab program.

If you are interested in using Ocean First Education materials in conjunction with your MarineLab program, they are offering a 50% discount for MarineLab teachers! Simply request your discount code after you have sent in your deposit for your MarineLab program.

BEFORE YOUR MARINELAB PROGRAM

Marine Ecology Short Course
Marine Invertebrate Short Course

Either of these courses, or just choosing a chapter within the course, would provide a nice general overview for more specific content that is covered during MarineLab field trips. Can use bits and pieces, or can use all the material to deliver a 2- 3 week long course. Middle/High School.

Explorer Series

Each of these short videos include some fun facts and some probing questions and can be adapted for ANY grade level. These can be used to get students excited about what they may see during the MarineLab field trip and get them thinking like a scientist when they do see these animals. Specific topics include: sea stars, octopuses, nudibranchs, cnidarians, crabs, anemones, reef sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, lionfish, butterflyfish, coral reefs.

AFTER YOUR MARINELAB PROGRAM

Ocean Discoveries Short Course
Any of the Megafauna Short Courses:
Sharks, Sea Turtles, Marine Mammals, Rays

These courses would provide opportunity for students to learn more in depth about what they may have seen (or wanted to see!) during their MarineLab trip. Middle/High school.

360 Lesson Plans

These lessons expand on content or experiences students were introduced to on a general level during their MarineLab program. Recommended options include Underwater Photosynthesis, Shipwrecked, Energy Flow, Fishing for the Future, Color Scattering. Grades 6 - 8.
